Alchymia Stories

1972

Origins and foundation

Lucio Doro, passionate about wood decoration, begins his professional activity by visiting workshops in Brianza with his equipment: a portable table, four jars with thinner, linseed oil, bronze powder, and some brushes.

These are the years of baroque-style furniture, which finds its place in Italian homes. Lacquered furniture enriched with hand-painted bucolic scenes: small landscapes, floral bouquets, rustic characters, or people dressed for festivities.

In the late 1970s, due to continuous growth, there arises a need to expand production by introducing new processes, including the complete cycle of lacquering and decoration.

2000

Research and Materials

With the increasing number of new commissions, the adventure of Alchymia begins as a sole proprietorship dedicated to producing large decorative paintings featuring floral subjects or classical art themes, where craftsmanship finds expression in three-dimensionality, color, and the refinement of materials used.

The stylistic research also turns its attention to French Art Deco, with focused studies on the methods of using specific materials: straw, brass, egg shell technique, and semi-precious stones.

The study of manufacturing techniques follows the stylistic exploration, balancing form and functionality. This results in the creation of some iconic pieces from these years, such as the Fabergé egg, Domitilla in egg shell, various tributes to Giò Ponti, and reproductions of classic Italian paintings on furniture.

The 2nd Generation

Years of success have brought significant changes to Alchymia. The generational transition from Lucio Doro to his children has introduced new perspectives to the company’s operations and a fresh artistic and commercial vision, capable of innovating on what has been built.

The company has expanded, and a new space allows for production to innovate and grow, providing room to showcase Alchymia’s signed furniture, where art meets furniture through products and decorations that become collections to be presented again.

The contributions of carefully selected internal and external collaborators have brought new ideas and solutions, shifting the company’s focus from decorative objects to taking on major projects for private residences, almost entirely for international clients.

This created the need for a dedicated space for meetings and discussions in the heart of Milan, which over the years has become a landmark of Italian Design on the world stage.
